Last Tuesday my son and I went out to a star watch gathering. It was put on by Mike Lynch. His website is linked below. Mike is a really nice guy and taught all the people alot of things about the stars and astronomy. His website has some really good information. And if you are wanting to buy a telescope, he has a buying guide. His site also has star maps. He also has some good links for other sites.
Mike started the night by asking what people knew about the constellations, how many we knew. Most people in the room thought that they knew one or two for sure. But they were wrong, they thought that the big dipper was considered a constellation.
He explained where to start your star gazing. (start with what you know) the big dipper or Ursa Major (The Big Bear). He included a hand-out that you (basically anyone) could follow from that point to a few others.
He gave some great stories about a few of the constellations and how they got the names or the myth on how they got up in the sky.
all in all it was a great night except for the fact that it was cloudy and we did not get a chance to really look at anything through his giant telescopes. Other then a tower light in the distance.
He did however tell us about the Moon, Venus and Jupiter coming together and so it was clear tonight and the 8 year old and I took a look. He was very excited.
Come on out and make the stars your old friends!
